its persistent, showy reddish-pink sepals that are effective from October
to November. Zone 5.
Hibiscus (Rose Mallow) These are glorious plants with impressive
large flowers that make showy accents. Blooms mid-summer till frost.
They break dormancy very late - about June 1st in our area. Mark where
you have planted them; be careful not to forget and dig them up by mistake.
These Hibiscus benefit from consistent
soil moisture (water them frequently) and a little extra fertilizer.
We use 1 Tablespoon Osmo-Cote slow release fertilizer once a month beginning
in June when growth first appears. Stop fertilizer about Labor Day.
The late Fleming brothers of Lincoln,
Nebraska have left an indelible mark with their many years of breeding
efforts on a number of perennials. Their Hibiscus breeding efforts resulted
in thicker-textured flowers with overlapping petals. Foliage advancements
included spoon and hydrangea shaped leaves as well as some finely dissected
maple-leafed forms. Adding to the leaf shape were breakthroughs in foliage
color, which significantly added to their appeal. Above all, these time-tested
cultivars are hardy to -30º F. We offer their Hibiscus Fantasia,
Fireball, Old Yella, and Kopper King for your enjoyment.
Because they grow to 4 feet in
one season,
Hibiscus can be shipped only in June in one-gallon pots.
(We move them to 2 gal. pots about the first of July)
Rose Mallow will reach 42 to 48" high and about 36" to 48"
wide in your garden. Althea will reach 6 - 10 feet high in most Zone
5 gardens.

dry periods.

white) flowers are slightly ruffled and measure 10 to 12 inches across!
Center of flower is bright red. Buds are pretty yellow.
Hibiscus syriacus (Althea or Rose-of-Sharon) In the same family as the Hardy Hibiscus
(Rose Mallows), these great perennials are actually shrubs that grow
in the shape of a flower vase - that is, narrow at the bottom, and wide
at the top. Most grow 8 - 12 feet, depending on your climate. In our
Zone 4b garden, they are a die-back shrub, meaning that every Spring,
we cut back the top growth to the areas that show new growth. This is
usually about 2/3 of the previous years' growth. Not to worry, though,
these beauties will surprise you with their quick growth in May and
June and beautiful blooms from late July through frost. Blooms last
a day, then fall off by themselves. They like a moisture-retentive soil
with lots of compost and a slow-release fertilizer (1 Tablespoon of
Ozmo-Cote) about once a month until Labor Day.
