ORNAMENTAL
GRASSES
Growing in popularity every year. Many are native to the midwest;
they belong in every prairie garden. Especially nice to use for their
strong, vertical accent during the summer. Their fluffy seed heads in
fall add interest when summer gardens need a new look. They lend a quiet
beauty to the winter landscape.

Carex siderosticha 'Variegata'

$7.99
(Creeping Broadleaf Sedge Grass) [8 - 12"] This is a very bright
and just vigorous enough plant. Wide bright green leaves with distinct
white stripes form slowly spreading clumps. It is completely deciduous,
often emerging just when you wonder if it's made it through the winter.
Noted plantsman Charles Oliver has had this in his zone 5 garden for 10
years. An excellent groundcover or edging for the shade garden; it will
take part sun to full shade! Zone 5
Festuca ovina 'Eliza Blue'
. $ 5.99
(Blue Fescue) [8-10"]The bluest of all the blue fescues. Compact,
with deep blue tufts all year. Its lovely blue color in the Spring is
a great backdrop for Dianthus (Pinks) because their colors look so well
together. Fescue forms a fine-textured spiky clump about the size of a
basketball; in June, taller flower spikes appear like small wheat stems.
Cute. Full sun to part shade. Zone 4.
Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning
Light'
$ 8.99
(Maiden Grass) [4 - 5 ft.] Fine blades with distinctive variegation of
green and white stripes give a silvery cast when viewed from a distance.
The late season plumes emerge bronzy-red in color and turn cream as they
age. We have it planted in the back of a perennial garden where the evening
sunlight in fall catches it and makes it look like it glows at sunset!
Makes the fall perennial bed special. Full sun to part sun. Zone 5.
Miscanthus sinensis Silberfeder

(Silver Feather Grass) [8 ft.] A very tall, very hardy grass that will
add beauty to your fall perennial garden. Shimmering silvery-white blooms
that emerge much earlier than other grasses. Good as a specimen or a screen.

Pampas Grass which will not survive our winters. Zone 5.

of the prairie grasses, this grass makes a very distinctive border when
planted 18-24” apart. Lovely, light, airy flowers in September and October.
Often has a glowing pumpkin orange fall color. Prefers well drained, upland
soils. Zone 3-8.
