These are indispensable plants for the shade garden
that made wonderful accents for hostas or other shade plants. Grow
in well-drained, loose soil, rich in organic matter. Apply compost
or well-rotted manure in the spring.
Ferns like a moist, but not soggy, soil.
A great reference book is "Ferns for American Gardens" by
John T. Mickel. John is the Curator of Ferns for the New York Botanical
Gardens, and is an authority on Ferns. Pick up a copy at your local
library, or invest in one for your bookshelf. It's well worth the
investment.
We offer the following ferns in several sizes
Adiantum
pedatum
(6-1/2")
.
$7.50
(5-Fingered Maidenhair) [1-2'] An airy delicate, light-textured fern
with glossy black stems and dancing fronds that form a 'hand'. Zone

Athryium angustum
forma rubellum(6-1/2")
$8.99
(Lady in Red Fern) [30 - 36"] Great, new fern that everyone is
asking for! Vibrant burgundy colors run throughout the stipe (stem)
making this one of the most exciting perennial garden fern introductions
to ever come along. The plant keeps producing new fronds all season,
as long as it is kept moist, so you can enjoy the red for several
months. A nice addition to a shade garden. To bring out the best ruby
color, place this fern in bright light (a few hours of morning sun
or filtered light all day) and provide moderate levels of nitrogen
(a topdressing of compost or some 5-10-5 fertilizer applied sparingly
once in the spring). Zone 4Limited quantity.
Athryium filix-femina
(6-1/2")
...

(Lady Fern) [1-2'] This is a lacy fern with a bright green-yellow
cast and wide, deep cut leaves. Likes partial shade and moist soil.

(Japanese Painted Fern) [12-18") Unusual fern with triangular
fronds. It is colorful, with soft gray, red, purple, and green flushed
fronds. The color is stronger with some light sun. This is one of
our best selling ferns. Zone 3.
Athruium x Ghost
(6 1/2")
...
.. $8.50
(Ghost Fern) [24-36"] Mickel Collection. A most unusual fern
from the Lady / Painted Fern group. Ghost fern has stunning fronds
that stand broad and tall. Wonderful as a foreground plant in the
deep shade because it stands out and complements everything around
it. New growth is a ghostly lime green. Quite different. Zone 4.
Dryopteris affinis
crispa (1 gallon)
$10.00
(Golden-scaled Male Fern) [2 - 3 ft.] One of the great ferns for the
garden, the fronds of this plant are leathery and have a lustrous
surface. It is easy to grow, and can tolerate a considerable amount
of sun if given enough moisture. This is a good replacement for the
Ostrich Fern. Zone 4-8.
Dryopteris filix-mas
Parsley (6 ½")
$
7.50
(Parsley-Leafed Male Fern) This is a new one for us that isn't even
listed in the fern reference books! It has an unusual look - almost
like a bunch of parsley - that grows in shady, moist soil. We wanted
to try it and we think you will too.
Osmunda cinnamonea
(6-1/2")
...
..$7.50
(Cinnamon Fern) [2-1/2 - 5'] This fern is named for its bright cinnamon-colored
fertile fronds (occurring after the green spores are shed). It is
a vase-shaped fern that prefers wet, lime-free soil. In fall, this
turns a beautiful golden color. Zone 2.
Polystichum acrostichoides
(6-1/2"")
..
.... $7.50
(Christmas Fern) [1-2'] This fern is a robust evergreen plant, easily
grown in diverse habitats. It often is green throughout the winter
in our gardens. The common name comes from the practice of using it
for Christmas decoration by early settlers of North America. Zone
3.
Thelypteris decursive
pinnata (6 ½")
.. $7.50
(Japanese Beech Fern) [1 - 2 ft.] Erect, bright green fronds all through
the growing season. New plants are produced on short runners away
from the 'mother' plant, yet it is not invasive. And, it can be easily
divided by digging the whole plant and separating the small plants
from the parent. This is another good replacement for Ostrich Fern.
Zone 4 - 10.
ALL FERNS CAN BE SHIPPED IN SPRING OR FALL.
