This group of plants does well in dappled sunlight. They usually prefer moist organic soils. Supplemental watering in dry periods is a must.

(Creeping Broadleaf Sedge Grass) [8 - 12"] Here's a grass that will do well in the shade garden. This is a very bright and just vigorous enough plant. Wide bright green leaves with distinct white stripes form slowly spreading clumps. It is completely deciduous, often emerging just when you wonder if it's made it through the winter. Noted plantsman Charles Oliver has had this in his zone 5 garden for 10 years. An excellent groundcover or edging for the shade garden; it will take part sun to full shade!

Keep it on the dry side to discourage unwanted spreading.

Epimedium (Barrenwort or Bishop's Cap or Fairy Wings)These are clump forming perennials, excellent for dry, deep shade under trees where few others will perform. Foliage is tinted red on some varieties, especially in spring. Flowers form right above the small new foliage, looking like tiny dancing butterflies. The foliage persists through winter and often develops a bronzy-red color that looks great against new white snow.

Will grow nicely shade or in part shade. Treat as a die-back shrub and cut back last year's growth to the ground. Will grow 4 ft. in one season.

Tiarella (Foamflower) These are greatly appealing for their shade tolerance, early bloom season, light fragrance, repeat flowering, and unusual leaf shapes. They bloom in very early Spring and provide nice leaf color in the fall. Some varieties will bloom repeatedly, if deadheaded. Excellent low-maintenance plants; spectacular in mass plantings. They are a perfect companion to hostas and ferns. Best performance is given when they receive filtered light and no direct afternoon sun. (They seem to melt in the hot afternoon sun.)

[4 - 6"] This lovely plant is a clump forming tiarella hybrid that combines totally cut foliage with great vigor. As an added attraction, the side lobes of most leaves are raised above the bottom lobe, looking like a butterfly about to take flight.
