The birch tree is one of my favorites due to its clumping habits, ability to survive cold winters. They work very well in home landscapes because they are more of a medium size. They work well as a foundation or anchor tree on the corner of a house, or as a stand-alone specimen in the center of a yard.

In the picture here, a river birch pokes up and through a stand of day lily.

I also like them for their ability to suck up water in areas where that can be a problem, with the River Birch being the best choice for this.
